The Nearly Lost Gardens of Arbigland
These are called the 'nearly' lost gardens because they weren't quite as lost as the Lost Gardens of Heligan! Arbigland Gardens were originally laid out in the 18th Century, and are built around a straight 1/3rd of a mile Broad Walk running from the house down to the beach on the Solway Firth. Many of the trees lining the Broad Walk are over 200 years old and at the end of the walk there is a panoramic view across the Solway Firth to the Lake District fells. This is another garden with different 'rooms' including a Japanese garden; a sunken garden; a sundial garden and a Well Head garden. There are some steps around the garden and steps down to the beach but it is comparatively level compared to other gardens in the area. Your dog is welcome anywhere in the garden on a lead. NB. There are no toilets or refreshments at Arbigland but these are available 'next door' (maybe half a mile or so) at John Paul Jones Museum
