- Red Kite Feeding Station
Red Kite Feeding Station
The feeding station is part of the Galloway Red Kite Trail. The kites are fed at 2pm every day and, from the veranda of the visitor centre/cafe, you and your dog can watch the spectacle of 80-100 wild red kites fly in from the surrounding countryside and circle around for a long time until one finally swoops down to pick up the food and the others follow. None of them want to be the first to feed so circling can take a while. .You can watch for as long as you like until the birds finally leave. It is an amazing sight to see and, whilst most of the food is put on a platform a short distance from the visitor, the staff put a small amount of food down in front of the visitor centre so you are close enough to the birds to clearly see their markings. This feeding station is run in conjunction with the RSPB who have a hide on site, and sometimes a guide who can tell you more about the birds. Red kites have been fed at Bellmck Farm pretty much since birds were first release in the area at the beginning of this century
