PK Porthcurno Museum of Global Communications
(5 reviews)
Discover the Museum of Global Communications, explore the amazing story of our connected world, and how the tranquil valley of Porthcurno, Cornwall became host to the past, present, and future of worldwide communications. Dog-Friendly + Family Fun
Read MorePK Porthcurno is the UK’s only dedicated museum of global communications telling the amazing story of our connected world in the place where it all started. From the discovery of electricity and the invention of Morse code to modern-day optical fibres, satellites and multiplexing, our award-winning museum combines the wonder of science with amazing histories and tales of human endeavour from around the globe. Set in beautiful sub-tropical gardens and a short walk from Porthcurno’s famous beach, PK Porthcurno’s spacious and interactive gallery, top secret World War Two bunkers, one-of-a-kind Cable Hut and Planet PK environmental programme provide a unique experience for all. For 100 years, Porthcurno was home to the largest telegraph station in the world, at the centre of the first truly global telecommunications network. When the telegraph station closed in 1970 the school of engineering on its site remained the pre-eminent place to study developing communication technologies, until its closure in 1994. The museum was opened in 1998, located in the old telegraph station. The intervening years have seen it grow in stature and critical recognition, now enjoying designated status in recognition of its national and international significance. A major development in 2014 saw the gallery spaces enhanced and updated, along with building a dedicated Learning Space and Archive Store. PK Porthcurno is open year-round (limited opening days in winter) attracting visitors of all ages.
