Piel Castle
(1 review)
The impressive ruins of a 14th century castle with a massive keep, inner and outer baileys, and towered curtain walls still standing.

Abbie, August 2021
The address here is incorrect at time of writing (Aug 2021) - likely mistaken for ‘The Piel Castle’ pub in Ulverston.
To visit Piel Island, drive to Roa Island (LA13 0QN) and take a small motor boat ferry across to Piel. In high season (April to Sept), the ferry runs backwards and forwards daily Monday to Sunday 11am – 4.30pm (weather permitting) and costs £5.00 return per adult, £3.00 return per child and under 5’s are free.
The ruined castle is atmospheric. It is situated in a grassy field with plenty of room for dogs to run. The island is a nice place for a picnic, but if you want to buy food and drink there is a pub on the island called the Ship Inn (closed over winter). We walked the dog around the small island, it didn’t take very long so would be suitable for dogs who aren’t used to walking long distances.
