Goodnestone Park Gardens
Goodnestone Park Gardens - over 12 acres of privately owned gardens to explore in a secluded corner of Kent
Read MoreDUE TO THE CURRENT SITUATION THE GARDENS AND CAFE ARE CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE
A classical English country garden, Goodnestone is a haven of beautiful tranquillity hidden away in south-east Kent. Jane Austen was a frequent visitor, her brother having married into the family in 1791.
Visitors to Goodnestone Park Gardens are welcome to bring the family dog. Dogs are also permitted in the Old Dairy Cafe (open to non-garden visitors), but must be kept on a short lead at all times. There are 14 acres to explore and discover, including the arboretum, a gravel garden, a box parterre, a rockery and pond and several outstanding ancient trees. A gravel garden planted with different species of ornamental grasses makes an attractive and peaceful place to linger.
There is the option to follow the reinstated 18th century Serpentine Walk as it winds its way through the parkland allowing fine views of the Mansion. This route was a very significant part of the garden design drawn up in the 1760s. Since then the walk has come and gone in usage, and during the 20th century was virtually lost. The Georgians loved their walks, and the Serpentine is typical of the style of walk created at this time, with a sinuous path weaving in and out of a gently culitvated woodland and parkland. Along the way there would be viewing points and resting spots for enjoying the scenery. The early Ice House is in one of these, located in an old chalk quarry, very much resembling a gothic grotto.
The former dairy at the entrance to the gardens has been completely refurbished and now serves as The Old Dairy Café. With courtyard seating, it is a lovely space to enjoy brunch, lunch or a cream tea, prepared by the gardens’ own chef. The mouth-watering menu uses locally sourced food, including produce from the Gardens. Everything is freshly made on site, including bread, pastries and cakes.
At Goodnestone you can relish the romance and tranquility of a quintessential but highly individual English country garden.
