Part of the UNESCO Hadrian's' Wall World Heritage Site, Arbeia, South Shields' Roman Fort is an archaeological park and Roman museum featuring stunning full-scale Roman reconstructions and one of the most important collections from Roman Britain. Open seasonally from April - September, the museum has a programme of living history events that take place outside across the former fort site, including gladiator battles and heritage markets. Free entry, donations welcome.
Part of the UNESCO Hadrian's' Wall World Heritage Site, Arbeia, South Shields' Roman Fort once guarded the main eastern sea route to Hadrian's Wall during the Roman Empire. Towering above the entrance to the River Tyne in South Shields, Arbeia was a key garrison and military supply base to other forts along the Wall and is an important part of the history of Roman Britain.
Throughout the course of history Arbeia has had several guises; from the Roman Emperor's HQ for the Scottish invasion to a busy cosmopolitan port. It's hosted dramatic tales of murder, fire, and holds the key to ancient love stories. It was a huge supply base for the Roman army, home to 600 Roman troops and is said to be the birth place of the Northumbrian King Oswin. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site with the finest full-scale Roman reconstructions in the country showcasing some of the most significant finds from that time.
Today, Arbeia is a museum and archaeological park with full-scale Roman reconstructions - immerse yourself in the world of the Romans in the heart of South Shields. Explore inside the reconstructed Roman buildings including the impressive West Gate, lavish Commander’s villa and explore a soldier's barrack block.

Stories are brought to life at Arbeia through a variety of events and displays including gladiator battles, falconry displays, Roman re-enactments, storytelling and more.

Open seasonally April - September: Monday - Friday 10am - 5pm, Saturday 11am - 4pm and Sunday 1pm-4pm
Where are dogs allowed?
Arbeia has a large outdoor archaeological park where dogs are very welcome;; Dogs are not allowed into any building apart from the Entrance Building - water bowls are available. Assistance dogs allowed everywhere.

Arbeia is open seasonally April - September. There is a dog paw print on a piece of Roman tile found on the site dating the 3rd century - so dogs have been there for many years!
