The Horse House, a detached unique and quirky one bed, dog-friendly cottage on the site of former stables, has incredible far-reaching countryside views over Devon, Dorset and Somerset from every room. It has a vaulted living/dining room, fully equipped kitchen, a beautifully fitted shower room downstairs, and a loft-style bedroom with king size bed upstairs.
Outside, the garden and wood are fenced and completely dog safe, as is the adjacent field which you are welcome to exercise your dogs in off-lead as long as there is no livestock in the field during your stay.
We are currently offering minimum four night stays at this time.
The Horse House has a retro feel inside with plenty of original mid-century details but has all the modern technology and appliances you’ll need including dedicated wifi and Smart TV. For four-legged guests, we have dog bowls, dog towels and spare leads and poo bags if required. We also leave some dog treats as a welcome present! We're super dog-friendly here (you can bring up to two well behaved dogs with you but please only bring them if they are good with other dogs as there is a resident dachshund, Limo, on site and another dog living in the property behind. The property is totally dog-safe, fenced the whole way round with stock-fencing so your dogs can be off lead exploring the wood (and the field, as long as there is no livestock in there during your stay). There are lots of public footpaths around here, some within walking distance and others a short drive away. There are also the beaches at Lyme Regis and Charmouth and other great dog walks in places like Lambert's Castle and Shute Woods. Inside the Horse House, the kitchen is fully equipped with (hopefully) everything you might need including plates, glasses, mugs, cutlery, kitchen utensils and a corkscrew of course! There is an induction hob, a main oven and a combination oven/microwave. It's also equipped with a dishwasher and washer/dryer. You'll be welcomed with a starter package of fair trade teas, coffees and biscuits as well as milk, cereal, bread, butter and jam. For stays of three nights or longer, we'll reward you with a bottle of prosecco or wine, beer or cider depending on your preference. We'll even make sure you've got ice cubes in the freezer! If dark skies and star-spotting are your thing, you'll really enjoy staying here as at night, there is barely another light to be seen. You can borrow our telescope if you want to - you'll probably know more about how it works than us! We'll make sure the bird feeders are full so keep your eyes open for the huge variety of birds that fly around here including greater spotted woodpeckers, collared doves, nuthatches, chaffinches, our shy green woodpecker (who we think has finally found a girlfriend!) and resident buzzards as well as the annual visits from swallows and swifts. There is an award-winning dog-friendly pub/restaurant, The Tytherleigh Arms, a two minute drive away as well as a new farm shop just opposite the pub. There is also a local shop with newspapers, groceries and household staples just two minutes in the car up the road in Chardstock. The local town of Axminster is only ten minutes away where you'll find the newly-rennovated George Hotel, a variety of good restaurants and pubs, some great independent coffee shops like The Higgler and the Arts Cafe, and a variety of other independent shops as well as Tesco and two Co-ops, Miller's Farm Shop, petrol garage and of course, the famous Axminster Carpet factory outlet shop. If you don't want to eat out but would prefer not to cook, both Axminster Indian restaurants (Safar and Cinnamon) will deliver to here. There is a fantastic fish and chip shop in Axminster (Lemon Plaice) and a great Chinese (Golden House), both of which will take your order over the phone so it's ready for you to whizz in and collect it. There is also a Dominos Pizza in Chard about ten minutes away in the car.

Alison Bradshaw, September 2022
Beautiful place and somewhere you can safely let your dog(s) roam knowing they cannot escape! Wooded area, grass, paths, everything a dog and owners would hope to have and very rarely get!
