Fully tested and 5* approved by our Transylvanian rescue Mioritic Sheepdog Harley McFarley. Herdwick Barn is a single-level dog-friendly barn conversion with uninterrupted views to The Howgills fells, best enjoyed from the stunning sun-trap patio while your dog explores the 1 acre securely fenced zoomies-zone and enjoys refreshment from the bespoke dog rainwater drinking trough.

Take a look at drone footage of the grounds for your dog to explore, and enjoy the video tour, here:  Herdwick Barn, Sedbergh on Vimeo.

Open plan living includes granite-topped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine and wine fridge, island diner and best-grade kitchen kit cooks love. Walk through to the living area with big squashy corner sofa facing the multi fuel burner and get cosy in front of the smart TV or try a tactical snooze with your feet up. The two double bedrooms (one converts to a twin) each benefit from ensuite w.c. and shower rooms. Herdwick Barn is in a gated spot off the quiet country lane and its elevated position offers the best views over rolling countryside. There are many lovely walks off road for dog walkers, and the town, with its range of pubs and restaurants is just a 1m walk. Most places are dog friendly. Herdwick is in a dark sky area - so if star-gazing is your thing, this is the place for you on a clear night. Sedbergh, England's Book Town, is also home to the world-famous 500-year-old Sedbergh School. Nearby villages are a must for exploring and the fell walks, from easy to a bit brisker, are many. To the front of the property the dog zoomies paddock is secured with estate fencing and meshed for smaller dogs' safety. To the rear it's sheep netting. Just open the French doors from the kitchen... Garry and Sarah at Fernwood Cottages are happy to help you with a booking. We've provided some doggy towels and a throw or two, please keep your pet off the cockatoo chair (we'll put a cover on if dogs are coming, but it's a delicate flower and needs to be left to sulk under a blanket when doggy guests visit please) and cover the sofa if your dog is joining you on it. If you have children with you, ask them how many animals they can spot in the house (the coffee table has lion paws for example and there are many animal images to be found if you look carefully!) If you hear hooting during the night, the resident owl's owl box is high up Herdwick's sycamore tree. Patio dining or drinks are well catered for with outdoor dining and seating options (the seat pads are in the cupboard on the patio under the overhung roof, next to the log store). Private parking for up to 4 cars and EV charger. Uber-fast WIFI.

Sandra Pescod, October 2024

We've tried 'dog friendly' holidays before and have been disappointed, so this time we came without dogs to see if they would like it. (Animals are so important to us) How lovely it turned out to be! Excellent paddock for dogs to run free and bowls and toys are all available. The enclosed 'human garden' to sit in as the sun goes down over the fields in the evening allows 'our best friends' to share it with us safely. The accommodation didn't disappoint! Tastefully decorated with some 'classic furniture' restored to resemble items you might find in luxury London apartments. Quality appliances, soft thick towels and TV's in every room. Loads of dog friendly walks and lovely dog friendly 'wild' beer garden at the Black Bull in the village. Also has a luxury Spar shop and several individual shops with unique merchandise. Locals are very friendly. Super holiday. Really hoping to return soon with 'pooches' in tow.

Miscellaneous Notes

Two small, medium or large dogs (up to Lab size) is fine but giant breeds won't fit comfortably in the house. Good property for people with limited mobility as on one level, but there is a step up to the front door and two steps up to French doors at the rear. Although no full welcome pack, there are treats, dog throws, dog towels, two bowls and an outdoor water trough for dog drinkies. The whole plot is securely fenced, just make sure the parking area gate is closed, open the patio doors and let them go. What 3 Words Chefs Routine Flinches
